Student Attendance Records

With regard to student attendance records, implementing a school/ETB policy on data protection should take account of the school's/ETB’s legal obligations and responsibilities under the Education Act 1998 and sections 20 and 21 of the Education (Welfare) Act 2000 relating to the maintenance of the School register, and records relating to attendance and non-attendance of students.

The National Educational Welfare Board (NEWB) provides guidelines for the collection, recording and reporting of these attendance records. Schools are obliged to observe these guidelines and update themselves on any changes that arise thereto. To access  these guidelines go to www.Tusla.ie, which now replaces the NEWB.
